Aphasia

Aphasia is an acquired neurogenic language disorder resulting from an injury to the brain—often a stroke or traumatic brain injury (TBI). Aphasia involves varying degrees of impairment in producing spoken language, understanding spoken language, written expression, and reading comprehension.

At BYC, we offer individual therapy, intensive therapy, and group therapy. The goals of therapy include restoring lost language abilities, strengthening intact communication skills, compensating for impairments through teaching strategies, and using AAC. We strive to help you or your loved one get back to participating in academic, vocational, and social activities!

Intensive aphasia treatment is considered the most effective type of therapeutic intervention. Research in this area has consistently shown that intensive aphasia treatment results in significant overall improvement. At BYC, we offer both traditional therapy, often covered by insurance, and intensive therapy, which can be a combination of insurance and private pay or private pay only. The amount of therapy and the time in the session are tailored to the patient's specific needs.

We also encourage our patients with aphasia to check out Voices of Hope, a local non-profit with great resources. Click here to see the resources!
